The feasibility study for Tashikurgan airport was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission on Saturday and will accelerate the construction of new airports in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, Xinjiang Daily reported.

The airport is a key project along the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and would represent the first airport in the region, according to the news report on Sunday.

The county, situated in the southwestern part of Xinjiang, reaches an average altitude of more than 4,000 meters. It borders Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Located in Tashikurgan Tajik autonomous county, the Tashikurgan airport is estimated to cost more than 1.63 billion yuan ($232.86 million) to build.

The National Development and Reform Commission approved the feasibility study for construction of the airport in a statement on Oct 12, indicating the formal initiation of construction of the project.

In addition to a 3,800-meters-long and 45-meters-wide runway, the airport will include a terminal building with a construction floor space of 3,000 square meters, an airport tower and related supplementary facilities.

The airport is designed to handle more than 160,000 passenger trips and 400 metric tons of cargo annually.

When it begins operation, the airport is expected to play an important role in constructing the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

Xinjiang plans to build nine new airports this year as part of efforts to improve connectivity and transform itself into a transportation hub under the Belt and Road Initiative.
