TAIYUAN - North China's Shanxi province plans to strengthen its control over all the drain outlets along the Fenhe River, a major river flowing through the province, the provincial department of ecology and environment said Sunday.

At present, there are a total of 2,039 drain outlets along the Fenhe River. Industrial enterprises and urban sewage treatment plants that have obtained sewage discharge permits are required to standardize and record their operations in archives.

Urban and rural domestic sewage should be gathered for treatment and discharged in accordance with industry standards. Illegal sewage outlets should be resolutely blocked, according to the department.

It is expected that the water quality of the Fenhe River Basin will be significantly improved by December.
