Japanese architect Kengo Kuma's new book Kengo Kuma: A lab for materials has been released in November.
As a professor of the Graduate School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo, Kuma also has 30 years of experience in architecture.
His works include the Taikoo Li Sanlitun and the Opposite House in Beijing as well as Meme Meadows Experimental House in Hokkaido, Japan. He is now working on the new National Stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
In the book, he collects 81 examples of architecture and divides them into 10 categories by materials including bamboo, wood, paper, earth and stone.
Kuma uses photos, sketches and blueprints to discuss how he uses different materials to explore the possibilities in Eastern architecture.
He joined a discussion with writer Jiang Fangzhou and Ji Shisan, CEO of Guokr, China's leading popular science website, about humanity, design and the future along with the new book in Beijing on Nov 19.
