Over 8,000 officials punished for violating frugality code in November

BEIJING -- A total of 8,005 Chinese officials were punished in November for violating rules on frugality.

The officials were involved in 5,753 cases, according to the website of the Communist Party of China Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission.

Among those punished were 58 officials at the prefecture level and 699 at the county level.

Giving or accepting gifts was the most common misdemeanor, followed by awarding unauthorized allowances or bonuses and misusing public funds for banquets.

A total of 71,836 officials involved in 51,122 cases were punished in the first 11 months of 2019, according to the CCDI.

The CPC released its eight-point rules on frugality in late 2012 to combat undesirable work practices.
