More than 50 percent of Chinese consumers are willing to pay a modest fee for eco-friendly packaging used by e-commerce retailers, a recent survey showed.

According to the survey commissioned by China Youth Daily, 53 percent of the respondents said that they would be willing to pay the green packaging cost, 24.4 percent said they would not, and 22.6 percent said they aren't sure about which option to take.

The survey polled 2,000 people, 69.2 percent of whom shop online at least once a week.

About 87 percent of respondents said plastic bags are overused in e-commerce, and 27.5 percent said overuse of plastic bags in e-commerce is very common. Almost 91 percent of respondents believed it is necessary to solve the plastic waste problem in the industry.

About 60 percent of respondents said they would reuse plastic bags, while nearly 38 percent would throw them away.

As for how to reduce the overuse of plastic bags in the e-commerce industry, 59.6 percent of respondents suggested online retailers provide more packaging options to consumers, instead of proactively offering them; 58.7 percent proposed popularizing the use of shared green packaging boxes, which can be recycled after the delivery of goods; and 56.7 percent advised online retailers to simplify packaging.
