Guangzhou, the capital of South China's Guangdong province, will develop into a major global comprehensive transport center in the next 15 years, according to the local government.

The city government unveiled on Thursday a 15 year-development plan to build a multi-layer urban rail network, aiming at increasing rail's share of public transportation to 80 percent by 2035.

By building high-speed direct railway networks, travel time between Guangzhou and major cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area will be shortened to 60 minutes, according to the city's bureau of planning and natural resources.

Meanwhile, travel time on the rail networks between the downtown Guangzhou and its suburban areas will be reduced to half an hour.

Two new metro lines will be added, along with an east-west high-speed subway track linking downtown Guangzhou with neighboring Foshan and Dongguan, according to the authority.
