Man 'shot dead' in apparently terror-related incident

A man has reportedly been shot dead in a busy London street in what police officers say is a possible terrorist incident.

The Mirror newspaper said multiple people were stabbed in broad daylight before armed police ended the incident that began around 2:30 pm local time.

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said: "A man has been shot by armed officers in Streatham. At this stage it is believed a number of people have been stabbed. The circumstances are being assessed; the incident has been declared as terrorist-related."

Sky News correspondent Mark White said photos of the shot man that have appeared on social media show someone wearing what looks like a suicide vest.

Witnesses say ambulances and police cars were immediately on the scene, which is on Streatham High Road in South London. Helicopters were circling overhead.

The Ambulance Service said in the aftermath of the incident that paramedics were treating casualties.

The police warned Londoners after the attack to stay away from the area while they responded to the incident.
