Eleven out of the top 20 new energy vehicle makers worldwide in terms of brand influence are Chinese, according to a recent report on NEV brand perception by Qianlong Think Tank released on Sunday.

The report evaluated new energy automakers worldwide, based on Chinese language news, social media feedback, online complaints, production quality, services, innovation and assets over the time spanning May 1, 2019, to April 30, 2020.

Following Tesla, Audi and VW, GAC NE ranked fourth on the top 20 brand influence list. BYD, Geely and BAIC BJEV respectively came in sixth, seventh and eighth. The two newcomers Nio and Xiaopeng Motors were also included.

The report said, technical innovation is an imperative driving force in developing a brand. In recently years, major NEV makers have seen growth in new technology applications and number of patents. The Chinese brand BYD Auto has 1,007 patents, and BAIC BJEV a total of 818.

Xiaopeng's P7, the newly launched model, is mounted with batteries with a cruising power of up to 706 kilometers, the longest in the world for a volume production car.

The think tank also pointed out proactive practices in corporate social responsibility, such as donating money or medical supplies during the COVID-19 outbreak, will shape a positive brand reputation and help turn intangible assets into tangible capital.
