Guangdong province has expanded inspections of local vegetable and meat markets, shopping centers, supermarkets, restaurants and venues that sell fresh produce, aquatic products, frozen meats and related products, according to a statement released by the provincial Administration for Market Regulation on Monday.
"The move aims to remove hidden food dangers in Guangdong after a cluster outbreak of COVID-19 was reported in Beijing's Xinfadi wholesale market," the statement said.
Meanwhile the administration created seven inspection teams on Sunday headed by its senior officials to visit and inspect major seafood, meat and vegetable bazaars and production companies in 21 prefecture-level cities in the weeks to come.
"Top priority will be given to inspecting imported aquatic products and frozen meat," the statement said.
The administration has urged relevant departments and cities in Guangdong to spare no effort to construct a fortified network to prevent a new outbreak of COVID-19 and ensure the health of local residents in the province, the statement said.
A monthlong, province-wide sanitation campaign was launched on Sunday, the statement said.
In addition to getting rid of garbage, improving sewage treatment and dredging the underground sewage pipe network, local business bosses, stall owners and staff members are required to redouble disinfection practices with their chopping tools and blocks, tables, knives and related tools in their stalls, the statement said.
"Those found to have violated laws and regulations will be seriously punished," the statement said.
A surprise inspection of Guangzhou's Huangsha Market for Aquatic Products on Saturday came up negative for the coronavirus in 71 salmon samples from more than 30 stalls.
Huangsha Market for Aquatic Products in Guangzhou's Liwan district is the largest wholesale special bazaar of aquatic products in Guangzhou.
