BEIJING - A fugitive bribery suspect, who was a section-level official with the now-defunct Ministry of Railways, has returned to China to surrender himself to the authorities after fleeing overseas for seven years, China's top anti-graft authority said Wednesday.

Hai Tao, 60, fled overseas in January 2013, according to the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China and the National Supervisory Commission.

In March 2014, the Haidian District People's Procuratorate of Beijing opened an investigation against Hai, who was listed on the Interpol Red Notice in March 2016.

Calling Hai's surrender an important achievement in China's continued manhunt for duty-related crime suspects, an official in charge of fugitive repatriation and asset recovery said China will step up efforts to hunt down fugitives and never let corrupt criminals go unpunished.
