More than 80 people suspected of drug trafficking have been detained across Beijing since a campaign against drug-related crimes was launched in the city last month, the capital's police said on Monday.

Besides the detentions, police also seized 9.3 kilograms of drugs and discovered more than 300 drug users in July, according to a statement from the Beijing Public Security Bureau.

In early July, three people on suspicion of using wine bottles to transport drugs were caught at an expressway service area in the city's Tongzhou district, and 6.2 kilograms of material were seized, the statement said.

Along with collecting clues to block the routes of drug traffickers and fighting individual drug trafficking cases, police citywide also made greater effort to destroying drug gangs in a bid to cut off crime at the root, it said.

Police in Daxing district clamped down on a gang of 18 people suspected of trafficking and taking drugs at the end of last month, seizing about 300 grams of drugs, it added.

"We'll pay more attention to fighting drug-related crimes and give stricter punishments to offenders in the second half of this year," the bureau said in the statement, calling for residents to say "No" to drugs and help keep the city safe.
