Ten speakers from various professional backgrounds shared topics about being brave at TEDx Xujiahui in downtown Shanghai on Sunday.

The speakers included expedition adventurers, a doctor, a certification officer of the Guinness World Records, an expert in 5G telecommunications networks and a high-ranking Chinese chef.

Each of them said that they focused on showing respect to the natural world and staying true to their aspirations in this challenging year.

One of the speakers, Wen Xu, shared his experience of hiking for 56 days across 1,500 km in the Antarctic alone and called on the audience to take their own actions to protect the environment.

"Many incidents in recent years, and in this year in particular, have reminded us that climate change is relevant to each individual. The first step of being fearless is to understand that humans are tiny in the face of the nature," he said.

Zhong Ming, deputy director of critical medicine at Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated with Fudan Hospital in Shanghai and the first medical expert to be dispatched from Shanghai to Wuhan when the epidemic broke out in January, shared his stories of feeling frustrated, challenged and eventually brave again during his stint in Wuhan that lasted more than two months.

"It was a precious time when the relationship between medical workers and patients as well as those within the medical team was so pure. The only common goal everyone had was to save lives, and the team members showed their best support to each other," he said.

Ma Mengjia, curator of TEDx Xujiahui, a local, self-organized event bringing people together to share a TED-like experience, said she hoped more voices from China could be heard in the world through events like this, especially when people from different parts of the world need to unite more than ever in this special year.

"When the world is still under the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic and our lives are faced with uncertainties, we need to take braver explorations into various aspects of life," she said.
