Typhoon Bavi made landfall in North Pyongan province of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea near its border with China at around 8:30 am on Thursday, the National Meteorological Center said.

The typhoon, the eighth of the year, was expected to bring high winds and heavy rain to Northeast China. The center issued a red alert on Wednesday, the highest of the four-tier warning system, for the first time this year.

The national observatory renewed the red alert at 6 am Thursday.

Liaoning's provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters ordered suspension of school classes and businesses, exempting special industries.

In coastal Dalian and Dandong, all ferry, railway and highway services that were expected to be affected by the typhoon were also suspended.

The typhoon also forced the temporary closure of outdoor scenic spots and construction sites, as well as the suspension of some trains and flights in Changchun, Jilin province.

Road transport in Mudanjiang, in eastern Heilongjiang province, was also suspended for one day on Thursday.

According to Liaoning's provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters, the typhoon — which has damaged infrastructure to varying degrees in some parts of the province — was expected to leave by 2 pm on Thursday.

The headquarters asked various government departments and institutions to treat anyone injured and to repair damaged infrastructure and quickly restore order.

Zhang Tongtong in Shenyang, Han Junhong in Changchun, and Zhou Huiying contributed to this story.
