MEXICO CITY - Six people were killed and six others wounded during a shooting that occurred Saturday morning at a food stall in northern Mexico City, city police reported.

According to the Secretariat for Citizen Security, officers responded to reports of a shooting in the Providencia neighborhood in the area of Azcapotzalco and soon after detained three people suspected of carrying out the attack.

Witnesses told the police that several individuals opened fire from the cover of their vehicles on people at a food stall, the secretariat said in a statement.

Shooting victims were taken to city hospitals, where at least six died of their wounds.

"It has been learned that six people were injured, including a 17-year-old minor, and another six who lost their lives due to the shooting," the statement said.

Police detained the three alleged shooters as they were traveling by car through the Centro neighborhood of Azcapotzalco, around five kilometers away from where the attack occurred.

Located at the northern limits of the Mexican capital, the Providencia neighborhood is an area known to have a high level of drugs sales, assaults and robberies, according to local media.

Mexican authorities have said in recent months that rising violence in Mexico City is due to turf wars between criminal groups attempting to take control of the local drug trade.
