Iran hails end of arms restrictions

Xinhua | Updated: 2020-10-18 22:18

TEHRAN - Iranian Foreign Ministry earlier on Sunday released a statement on the termination of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) arms restrictions and travel ban, saying the "definitive and unconditional" termination requires no new resolution.

"As of today, all restrictions on the transfer of arms, related activities and financial services to and from the Islamic Republic of Iran, and all prohibitions regarding the entry into or transit through territories of the UN member states previously imposed on a number of Iranian citizens and military officials, are all automatically terminated," the statement read.

The text, published on the ministry's website, recalled that the sanctions imposed by the UNSC on Iran's military exchanges were terminated in 2015 with the signing of the international agreement on Iran's nuclear program and the adoption of UNSC Resolution 2231.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) established the "definitive and unconditional" termination of the aforementioned arms restrictions and travel bans automatically, with no other action required," the statement of Iran's Foreign Ministry said.

"A momentous day for the international community, which, in defiance of malign US efforts, has protected UNSC Res. 2231 and the JCPOA," Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif wrote in his Twitter account.

"Today's normalization of Iran's defense cooperation with the world is a win for the cause of multilateralism and peace and security in our region," he added.
