A group of 34 people suspected of producing and selling fake and low-quality cosmetics across Beijing were recently detained after a resident's report, municipal police said on Monday.
More than 1,200 goods were made of poor-quality materials and 10 forged popular trademarks also were seized, the Beijing Public Security Bureau added in a statement.
Police officers in Fangshan district received a report from a woman surnamed Zhang on April 12, who complained she had been cheated out of more than 5,000 yuan ($785) after buying counterfeit cosmetics from a man, according to the statement.
After a preliminary investigation, a special team was established, because the police found other residents in other districts also had been defrauded in a similar situation and the fake products were from the same gang of suspects, it said.
On May 15, the group was caught at an inn where they made the fake products by Fangshan police, it said, adding further investigation is still ongoing.
