After graduation from high school, Zhou spent four years as a farmer before moving to the city to make a living. He served as a porter, a plumber and an electrician in Chongqing, and as a sailor in Guangzhou. He signed up for a one-year correspondence course in creative writing in Chongqing and completed it at age 24. [Provided to China Daily]

"I think writing a song is more difficult than writing a poem," Zhou said. "You have to bear in mind the tone patterns, to make a clear story within the condensed verses with simple words, to be acknowledged by ordinary people and to arouse their interest to sing on the lips."

Zhou said he has written many songs for companies, organizations and schools, with one of the best-known, Kiss My Younger Brother Friar Sand, which alludes to the hardships of truck drivers.

He said he has earned little from writing over the years."But I'll carry on with writing lyrics, which is the ultimate joy to me." He hopes to produce more widely sung lyrics in the future.
