Chinese shares close lower Tuesday

BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 2 percent to 3,446.98 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.33 percent lower at 14,350.65 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 1.31 trillion yuan (about $202 billion), up from 1.26 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.

Stocks related to the ceramics, wine-making and medical equipment sectors led the losses.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, fell 2.34 percent to close at 3,224.15 points.
