Meeting sets out Peaceful China vision

Top political adviser says efforts will help create a modern socialist nation

At a meeting on Wednesday, China's top political adviser, Wang Yang, called for efforts in building a peaceful China at a higher level to ensure that people live and work in peace and contentment, society is stable and orderly, and the country enjoys enduring peace and stability.

Focusing on advancing the Peaceful China initiative at a higher level, a three-day meeting of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, China's top political advisory body, concluded in Beijing on Wednesday.

Wang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, said building a peaceful China at a higher level is an important part of and a prerequisite for realizing the second centenary goal of building a modern socialist nation.

Stressing the balance between development and security, Wang said, "We should use the achievements of development to strengthen the material foundation for safeguarding security and also create a safe environment conducive to economic and social development."

He called on political advisers to pool wisdom for pushing forward the Peaceful China initiative by carrying out solid research and consultations.

Shen Deyong, a national political adviser and former executive vice-president of the Supreme People's Court, who attended the meeting, said the work of the Peaceful China initiative involves peace in public order and production safety, as well as peace in political, economic, ecological, cultural, cyber and other areas.

Another political adviser, Yu Rucong, who is deputy director of the China Meteorological Administration, said the security challenges posed by climate change must be taken seriously as recent extreme weather, including rainstorms, caused safety problems in China.

He proposed improving the mechanism for extreme weather prevention and emergency response, strengthening infrastructure, improving the accuracy of meteorological forecasts, and enhancing the public's awareness of risks and capability for self-rescue.

Sun Qian, a national political adviser who is deputy procurator-general of the Supreme People's Procuratorate, said China's three-year campaign to fight organized and gang-related crimes, launched in 2018, significantly improved public order and people's sense of security.

Advancing the fight against such illegal activities on a regular basis, starting from this year, is of far-reaching significance to the building of a peaceful country at a higher level, he said.

Law enforcement and judicial authorities should make discovering and investigating "protective umbrellas"－usually officials who hide such crimes for gangsters－an essential step in handling cases, he said.

Most organized crimes involve money laundering and efforts are needed to crack down on such crimes, he added.
