A man who set the home of his ex-wife on fire, killing her, was convicted of intentional homicide and sentenced to death by a court in Sichuan province on Thursday.

The Intermediate People's Court in the provincial Aba Tibetan and Qiang autonomous prefecture stripped the perpetrator, Tang Lu, of political rights for life, further ordering that he pay compensation to the victim's family.

The victim's elder sister told Red Star News, an online news outlet based in Sichuan, that the family plans to initiate a civil lawsuit to demand compensation.

According to the statement made by the court online, Tang married his late wife Atso in 2009, but the couple often argued and Tang assaulted her on several occasions.

In June 2020, the couple divorced, but Tang developed a grudge against his former wife when she refused to remarry him, it said.

The victim, who was popularly known as 'Lamu' on Douyin, a Chinese online short video platform, was killed while livestreaming from the kitchen at her father's home on Sept 14 last year. Tang set Atso on fire, causing the woman to eventually die from her burns two weeks later. Tang, who fled the scene, was later captured by police.

Charged with intentional murder by extremely cruel means and of causing great harm to society, the court said Tang's behavior merited severe punishment and handed him the death sentence.

Relatives of the defendant and the victim, as well as national lawmakers, political advisers and journalists, attended the announcement.
