With the popularity of short-video applications fueling consumers' demand for smartphones' imaging capabilities, artificial intelligence will play an important part in boosting mobile photography, market research companies said.

The comments came as the market research company iResearch said in a report that the popularity of short-video applications has made the shooting function the most important factor for consumers to buy smartphones. With the development of AI technologies, consumers have increasingly higher demands for the photography functions of smartphones.

Fan Haoqiang, researcher at the Chinese AI company Megvii's research institute, said in the process of gradually upgrading the rear cameras of the mobile phone from dual lens to three and four lens, the AI algorithm has become an indispensable part to facilitate multi-camera linkage.

With multiple lenses, mobile photography powered by AI technology is bringing a better shooting experience to consumers, Fan said.

According to him, Megvii has been developing multi-camera technology since 2016. After more than 5 years of technical iteration and optimization, it has now developed the industry-leading AI multi-camera algorithms and implemented the technology application in many mobile phones.

The global computing photography market will reach $29 billion in 2024, with a compound annual growth rate of 22.0 percent during the period of 2019 to 2024, according to a report by the research organization Markets and Markets.
