For dancer Hu Yang, protagonist Cheng Ying of the dance drama The Orphan of Zhao is unusual. "Previous roles of classical Chinese dance were powerful and noble people, or gifted literati and beautiful ladies... There are few tips about playing a commoner in classical Chinese dance," said Hu.
In the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) play, Cheng is submissive yet loyal, an insignificant yet great man.
What difficulties did Hu Yang face in portraying the ancient role? How to channel real-life experiences into developing a better character image? In this episode of "The Orphan of Zhao In the Eyes of Creators", Hu Yang shares his insights on portraying Cheng Ying.
"I think it's good that everyone sees Cheng Ying differently. People live with praise and criticism all the time. Just like there are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes... His behaviour and value have left us many different judgements and feelings. I think this is the best part of him," said Hu.
