New president, Party chief for Tsinghua

Wang Xiqin has been appointed president of Tsinghua University, while its former president, Qiu Yong has been named its Party chief, the Ministry of Education said on Friday.

According to the brief statement, the Organization Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China made the announcements at the university.

Chen Xu, former Party secretary of the university, will no longer serve in her post, the statement said, without going into details.

Wang, 54, got his bachelor's degree from Tsinghua in 1991. After graduating with a doctorate in electronic engineering in 1996, he took up a teaching post at the university.

He served in different posts, including as dean of the Department of Electronic Engineering, and as vice-president and executive vice-president.

Qiu, 58, also got his bachelor's and doctoral degrees in chemistry at Tsinghua and became a teacher at the university in 1994.

In 2002, he became dean of the Department of Chemical Engineering and later served as its vice-president in 2009, and president in 2015.
