Leading Chinese retailer Wumei Group plans to digitalize its entire businesses -- from consumer-side to corporate operations -- to further drive its interactions with customers and enhance its efficiency.

Zhang Wenzhong, founder and chairman of Wumei Group and digital enabler Dmall, said during the 2022 Global Summit, the flagship event of the Consumer Goods Forum, in Dublin, Ireland, that the most noticeable trend for retail in China in the past five years is innovation, digitization and focus on consumers.

For example, on innovation, a rising number of cutting-edge digital solutions have developed rapidly in China, he said.

"Everything is online, every task is online and everybody is online, so our commerce has to adopt this new trend," Zhang said. "The future is digitalizing our business completely, comprehensively and also bringing all the different parts of the business together: online, offline, consumer-side and companies' operations as well," he said.

The trend has pushed brick-and-mortar retailers such as Wumei to reach consumers, improve store operations and office operations digitally, he added.

Currently, about a total of more than 80 percent of revenue of Wumei Group is generated through its mobile application or WeChat mini program.

"Why this matters is because when one customer uses app to self check-out in stores in the meantime he's using the same mobile application to order from home," Zhang said.

For internal office operations, Wumei has adopted a single mobile application to operate their work, such as checking all the on-time data and setting up closer relationships with vendors and suppliers.

Zhang said the pandemic in a way has accelerated the digitization process, particularly for home delivery, which contributes to more than 40 percent of total sales for many retailers in China.

"I believe after the pandemic, maybe the home delivery number may come down a little bit, but in the long run, I think you can expect home delivery to represent 30-40 percent business," he said.
