Beijing had more than 4.41 million residents aged 60 or older at the end of last year, accounting for 20.2 percent of its permanent residents. The number indicates that the capital has entered the phase of a moderately aging society, on average, a senior official of the municipal government said on Friday at the 2022 China International Fair for Trade in Services.
"It's expected that Beijing will be a severely aging society by 2035 — which is a fact, as well as a challenge we are facing," said Wang Xiao'e, an official with the Beijing Health Commission and deputy director of the city's aging affairs office.
A report released at the forum said that Beijing had more than 3.11 million residents aged 65 or older at the end of last year, accounting for 14.24 percent of its permanent residents.
Meanwhile, the population aged 60 and above — who are registered in the city of Beijing — was 3.88 billion, or 27.5 percent of the registered population in the capital.
Usually, many permanent residents in mega cities such as Beijing and Shanghai are not registered in those cities because of certain thresholds.
Under UN standards, a region in which people aged 60 or above account for between 20 percent and 30 percent of the population is considered moderately aging.
