Transport network keeps up smooth operations during holiday

China's transport sector saw smooth operation during the week-long National Day holiday, the Ministry of Transport said on Friday.

A total of 255.5 million passenger trips were expected to be made from Oct 1 to Friday, the end of the holiday, an average of 36.51 million trips per day representing a year-on-year drop of 36.4 percent.

Highways are expected to transport 198.24 million passengers, an average of 28.32 million passengers per day, down 34.5 percent compared with the same period last year.

Waterways are expected to handle 4.64 million passengers, an average of 663,000 passengers per day, down 24.8 percent compared with the same period last year.

During the holiday, most road travel was short and medium distance. From Oct 1 to Friday, the daily traffic of the national freeway network is expected to be about 39 million vehicles, a year-on-year drop of 21.5 percent.
