It is an ancient Chinese institution of higher learning and one of the birthplaces of Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucianism during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). A cypress called General Cypress in the academy is regarded as the oldest cypress tree in China, enjoying the title of "Original Cypress".
