Classes for students at most primary and secondary schools in the Huadu district of Guangzhou, Guangdong province, resumed on Monday, amid a continued rise of COVID-19 infections across the city, according to an education official.

"The resumption of in-person classes in some areas is based on scientific, precise and comprehensive research and judgement of the current epidemic prevention and control situation," said Chen Xueming, deputy director of Guangzhou Education Bureau, during a news conference on Sunday.

Classes for students in Nansha, Zengcheng and Conghua districts, which reported fewer COVID-19 infections over the past few days, also continued, Chen said.

However, students in the city's seven urban districts, including hardest-hit Haizhu district and Huadu's Xinhua and Huacheng sub-districts continue to receive classes online, Chen said.

In off-campus training and childcare institutions in the seven districts, in person instruction remains suspended, while closed-loop management in higher educational institutions is still being implemented.

"There were still new cases being reported at community level and in schools across the city in the past three days," he said.

On Sunday, the city reported 189 new locally transmitted confirmed cases and 3,876 asymptomatic carriers, of which twelve infections were found during tests in local communities and in clinics, according to the local health authority.
