Last year, police nationwide busted about 160 mafia-style organizations and around 1,520 gangs, ultimately resolving 20,000 organized crime cases, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

Twenty-eight of the mafia-style groups and 229 gangs were operating in rural areas, and 310 gangs were involved in cases concerning the natural resources sector. Moreover, the police also detained 180 fugitives who were once involved in gang-related crimes.

While implementing the law against organized crimes, the ministry issued documents to guide case-handling and promoted the system for the solicitation, examination and handling of tipoffs.

The ministry received and handled about 12,000 gang-related clues last year. After verifying the information they received from tipoffs, they filed and investigated cases against gangs.

Public security departments also worked closely with other departments to push forward rectification in key sectors including education, financial lending and marketing to curb the spread of organized crime and address problems at the source, the ministry said.

In view of the industry management loopholes found in case handling, public security organs also promptly instructed relevant industry regulators to resolutely eradicate the breeding grounds for such crimes, it said.
