Customs officers from the Shenzhen special economic zone in Guangdong province recently seized 101 tubes of pregnant women's blood samples from a backpack carried by a departing passenger at a spot check.

The passenger did not declare to the customs and could not provide any official export licence or certificate when leaving the mainland with the blood samples at Shenzhen's Futian exit-entry port, according to a statement released on the social media account of the General Administration of Customs on Thursday

Officers from Huanggang Customs intercepted the blood samples, and the case has now been transferred to the anti-smuggling department for further investigation, the statement said.

Under Chinese laws and regulations, human blood and blood products are special entry-exit goods subject to customs supervision.

Special export licences or certificates are required when mailing and carrying microorganisms, human tissue, biological products, blood and related products into or out of the mainland, the statement said.
