Rule of law guarantee for Digital China

China Daily | Updated: 2023-03-20 08:25

The Cyberspace Administration of China recently launched a "Clean Network Action" focusing on key social networks, short videos, and online livestreaming platforms, cracking down on rumors, harmful and false information, and banning certain "self media" that counterfeit official institutions, news media, and specific individuals, so as to make the internet a clean space for all.

The internet should be under the rule of law. But with the rapid development of the internet, cyberspace governance faces more challenges.

It should be noted that cyberspace is not "a place outside the law's governance". Cyberspace is virtual, but its users are real people, who live in the real world and must abide by the law. On March 16, the State Council Information Office released a white paper, China's Law-Based Cyberspace Governance in the New Era, which introduces the practices of China's internet governance.

The facts indicate that China's construction of the rule of law in the internet sector has not only effectively improved the country's internet governance capabilities, but also contributed Chinese solutions to global internet governance.

The report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China vowed to improve the comprehensive network governance system and promote the formation of a good internet ecology. Ensuring the network is under the rule of law is not only essential to establishing a good internet ecology but also important for the construction of a digital civilization. Constantly promoting the improvement of its network governance is the only way for China to boost its cyber strength.

As stated in the white paper, China should always adhere to the concept of comprehensively governing the internet in accordance with the law, promote the orderly and healthy operation of the internet in accordance with the law, ensure the high-quality development of Digital China with the power of the rule of law, and provide a solid legal guarantee for the construction of a strong network country.
