Chinese battery maker CATL announced its plan on Tuesday to achieve carbon neutrality in its core operations by 2025 and across the battery value chain by 2035.
This marks the largest plan of its kind in the lithium-ion battery industry in the world.
CATL's shipped 289 GWh of lithium-ion batteries in 2022, seizing a share of 37 percent and 43.4 percent respectively in the global EV battery and energy storage battery segments, according to SNE Research.
"For CATL, achieving carbon neutrality is our responsibility. It demonstrates our capability, and opens up more opportunities," said Jiang Li, CATL's board secretary.
CATL said it will carry out carbon reduction in five key links ranging from mining to cell manufacturing.
The battery maker also demonstrated the detailed information of battery passport, a pilot program launched by Global Battery Alliance.
Consumers can learn about information of a battery by scanning the QR code on the battery passport so that they can choose low-carbon batteries, said the battery maker.
CATL has been revving up efforts in green development. In 2019, it took the lead in raw material tracing with blockchain technology in the industry.
Its Yibin factory in Sichuan province became the first carbon neutral battery factory in the industry in 2021.
CATL said its over 400 energy-saving projects in 2022 saved carbon emissions by 450,000 tons.
