A college graduate in Hangzhou unfriending 90 percent of her classmates and teachers on WeChat upon graduation spurred harsh replies from those who were unfriended.
Beforehand, she sent a message saying "We'll never meet again, so out of courtesy, we should unfriend each other. Best wishes to you." to notify her classmates and teachers.
However, she learned later many people were annoyed by her actions, with some sending her a friend request containing curse words, according to Liaoshen Evening News, a news outlet based in Shenyang, Liaoning province.
The graduate explained in an interview she barely knew the people concerned, and it is highly likely there wouldn't be any contact or communication after graduation. In order to avoid useless socializing, she decided to delete them once and for all. Only two people close to her were left.
Her actions created quite a buzz on Weibo, a Twitter-like platform in China. One Weibo user named Man Tian Dou Shi Da Xing Xing commented: "There was nothing wrong about what this girl did. For the classmates she didn't like, it was OK to cut them loose. I'm rooting for her trying to avoid useless socializing and doing what she wants to do." One netizen named Lan Mei Mei said: "That was a hasty move, you should wait until you take the graduation photo."
Others disagreed. One Weibo user named Xiao Cao Mei commented bluntly: "Nothing to be proud of, and this behavior was nothing but a demonstration of low EQ." Another named Tian Ju Zi commented: "I can see that you are not good at handling interpersonal relationships. However, deleting your teachers shows you are immature and impolite."
