China stands ready to strengthen communication with the United States to jointly tackle climate change, senior diplomat Wang Yi said in Beijing on Tuesday, urging the US to adopt a China policy that is reasonable, pragmatic and positive.
Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks when meeting with US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry.
There is great potential for China-US cooperation in climate change response, Wang said. Yet such cooperation needs understanding and support from people in both countries and favorable circumstances provided by sound bilateral relations, according to him.
Noting the world needs stable China-US relations, Wang called on both countries to effectively implement the important common understandings the two presidents reached in their meeting in Bali, Indonesia, in November last year.
The two countries should work together to remove interferences and bring bilateral ties back to sound development, Wang said.
The US should continue to follow the one-China principle, deal with the Taiwan question properly and practice mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation with China, Wang also said.
Kerry said the US attaches importance to stabilizing ties with China, and hopes to work with it to further improve the ties.
The US always follows the one-China policy, Kerry said. The US hopes to strengthen cooperation with China in the spirit of mutual respect, handle their differences properly and work with China to tackle global challenges, including climate change, he said.
