Police in Xi'an, Shaanxi province arrested 29 people and criminally detained 11 who provided false registration information for students taking part in the senior high school entrance exam in June.
In a notice issued on Sunday, the police said a local school fabricated government stamps to provide fake registrations for students from other provincial regions but took the exam in Xi'an.
Police arrested six people and detained five working at the school.
In two separate notices issued on Saturday, the police stated they have arrested 23 people and detained six working at another school and an education agency for similar crimes.
The police referred to the students as "returnee students". They have household registration in Xi'an but study in other cities, and returned to Xi'an to participate in the exam.
There are mainly two paths for "returnee students": Xi'an residents' children who go to study in the city where their parents work and return to Xi'an to take the senior high school entrance examination, or children of beneficiaries of preferential policies to attract talent who have obtained Xi'an household registration.
