Youth delegates benefit from model UN conference

The 2023 Model United Nations Conference on sustainable development closed in Shenzhen MSU-BIT University on July 19, 2023.

During the three-day conference, youung participants held discussions on eight academic themes from the perspectives of their respective countries and political entities, including energy technology, natural environment, food safety, earth and planetary science, climate change, human health and environment, human society and behavior, and sustainable cities and demonstrated their concern for global issues and their determination to solve the problems.

An academic team of 45 members rated the pre-meeting preparation, performance during meetings and informal meetings of representatives from eight committee groups. Judging from speech, document writing and communication, the team selected 12 best delegates and 37 outstanding delegates. Others awards included honorable mention, best paper, best performance and best preparation.

Lin Zhitong, winner of the best delegate and one of the student initiators of the conference, said that he is honored to participate with fellow representatives from all over the world. The conference not only provided a deeper understanding of global governance issues but also broadened his horizons and improved his expression and writing skills. He said that he will continue to work hard and contribute to sustainable development through practical actions based on what he has learned in the future.

Zheng Xi, a representative of the primary school group, said discussing important global issues as an "Australian representative" with outstanding representatives from all over the world was a rare experience in her life. She siad she found the conference enrollment online and talked about it with her parents. She said this meeting is not only an opportunity for academic exchange, but also a valuable platform to exercise her teamwork spirit.

Zhou Beiyu, a representative of the junior high school group, took part in the issue of the University of Michigan enrollment lawsuit under the theme "human society and behavior". He said discrimination is always the enemy to achieve equality and reasonable policies based on legal protection and mutual understanding and help from different groups are needed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

High school group representative Zhang Zhiyu said she took part in the discussion on climate change as a "Somali representative". Feeling doubted and frustrated at the beginning though, she realized that Somalia also has interests and demands after reading the background guide. She put forward suggestions based on the national conditions of Somalia and members of the developing countries were united by her draft resolution which was adopted after receiving two-thirds of the votes.

Wang Xinyu, a representative of the university group, said that the meeting provided her with an opportunity to understand the potential of renewable energy and digital innovation in transforming energy systems. She said she has realized the necessity of investing in renewable infrastructure and promoting clean energy technologies.
