Police in Shanghai have detained 108 suspects for fabricating resumes to scam salaries from companies.
The suspects, led by two people surnamed Wang and Liu, are accused of making up study experiences in elite overseas institutions and extraordinary past projects in sales in order to get hired by companies in sales or financing.
Once they were hired, the suspects would not bring in any sales or even show up to work during their probationary periods. When the companies terminated their contracts, the suspects would gang up to request employers to pay up their salaries, and employers would generally satisfy them just to dismiss them.
The suspects also exploited lax background checks and attendance systems within their target companies. They even recommended other members of their group for employment opportunities, sometimes employing individuals to act as decoy employees.
On July 19, the Pudong branch of the Shanghai police, along with several sub-branches, launched a coordinated operation involving over 100 officers to apprehend the suspects in Shanghai and other locations. As a result, 108 individuals have been detained under allegations of fraud.
The police are still investigating the case, but they believe that the suspects have defrauded companies of at least 80 million yuan ($12.3 million).
The police have urged enterprises to do thorough background checks for applicants to avoid being scammed. They also advised enterprises to call the police if they suspect they have encountered such crimes.
