More than 2,500 cases of telecom fraud have been solved since Beijing police launched a campaign on strengthening the city's public security at the end of June, data released by the Beijing Public Security Bureau showed on Friday.
On June 25, the bureau called for greater efforts to fight violations and crimes that damage the basic interests of residents, such as theft, gambling, fraud and those involving drug and food safety, across the capital, in a bid to give people stronger sense of security, fulfillment and happiness.
"Since then, we've focused more on telecom and online fraud, which is a big compliant among the public, to protect people's property safety," said Gao Huafeng, an official from the bureau.
Gao said that while combating fraudsters, police officers have also sent over 170 million pieces of anti-fraud text messages to residents, reminding them not to easily believe calls from strangers and helping them enhance prevention awareness.
He revealed that more than 400 people suspected of stealing and illegally purchasing electric bicycles have also been captured during the campaign, with seizure of over 150 such bikes and 60 storage batteries.
In addition, the police have detained 93 people on suspicion of providing illegal tourist services, such as scalpers and unlicensed drivers, he said, adding that the campaign will continue.
Moreover, the bureau has also given residents easier access to registering driving license examinations and applying for annual vehicle inspections, and improved the use of bus lanes by allowing all vehicles to pass on holidays and weekends, according to Wang Shifeng, deputy head of the bureau's traffic management department.
