Guangdong sees fresh closures as flood control alert raised to level 2

Classes at primary and middle schools in Zhuhai and parts of Guangzhou, Dongguan and Foshan in Guangdong province were suspended on Friday as torrential rains continued to hit the Pearl River Delta area.

The flood control alert was upgraded from level 4 to level 2 by the provincial flood, drought and typhoon control headquarters early Friday as the remnants of Typhoon Haikui hovered over the region.

In the 24 hours before 7 am on Friday, Guangdong province recorded an average rainfall of 67.7 millimeters, with 100 townships and subdistricts hit by more than 250 millimeters of rainfall.

Chang'an township in Dongguan and Nancun township in Guangzhou recorded rainfall of more than 400 millimeters during the period.

The Shiqiao metro station in Guangzhou city was suspended on Friday morning due to the deep flood outside the station.

In Dongguan, some buses and coaches were suspended and some reservoirs began discharging flood water on Friday morning.

Some roads and highways in the province were temporarily closed due to the risk of landslides, flooding or fallen trees.
