Brunei imports no farm, seafood products from Japan's Fukushima: ministry

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - There have been no imports of agricultural or seafood products from Japan's Fukushima prefecture into Brunei, the country's Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) said.

According to the Borneo Bulletin daily on Sunday, the ministry made the assurance in response to recent reports about the release of radioactive wastewater from the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean, which started on Aug 24.

The MPRT said it would continue to actively collaborate with the Brunei Darussalam Food Authority (BDFA) to rigorously oversee the sources of imported food supplies, including those from Japan, to safeguard food quality and safety standards.

All imported farm and seafood products must be accompanied by a health certificate, phytosanitary certificate, or a radioactive material analysis report recognized by the relevant authority in the exporting country, the report said.

Additionally, these imports must comply with the conditions outlined in the import permit issued by the sultanate's authority.
