NANNING - South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region on Monday upgraded its flooding alert to orange, the second-highest in the country's four-tier, color-coded weather warning system.

Several cities in Guangxi, including Yulin, Beihai and Qinzhou, have been battered by rainstorms caused by the remnants of Typhoon Haikui, the 11th typhoon of this year, since Saturday, according to the Guangxi hydrology center.

Torrential rains have driven the water levels of several rivers up by two to six meters and 19 hydrology stations in 15 rivers reported water levels above warning levels, it said.

Guangxi's south and its coastal regions are forecast to see further rainstorms in the coming days, lasting until Wednesday, with precipitation between 80 mm and 150 mm, local meteorological authorities said. The maximum precipitation in some regions is forecast to exceed 400 mm.
