Gong Jianhua, former vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the Jiangxi People's Congress, was sentenced to 15 years in prison and fined 5.5 million yuan ($754,000) on charges of bribery, China Central Television reported.

The illegally acquired assets were confiscated and will be sent to the national treasury. The Intermediate People's Court of Zhangzhou, Fujian province, announced the result of the first trial on Tuesday.

Gong was charged with taking bribes valued at 83.6 million yuan while taking advantage of his positions in Jiangxi, including as Party secretary of Nanchang, mayor of Yichun and Party secretary of Fuzhou, to offer assistance to certain individuals in land transactions, project contracting, project development and job promotions.

The court said that Gong's behavior constituted bribery, and the amount involved is particularly large. Considering that Gong voluntarily surrendered and truthfully confessed his crimes — actively disclosing facts that investigators were not aware of — and has showed repentance and actively returned the ill-gotten assets with interest, he qualified for mitigated punishment based on legal and discretionary factors.
