9 deputies charged in black man's jail death

A video released by the Nashville District Attorney's Office in Tennessee showed that Gershun Freeman, a 33-year-old black man, was beaten to death by multiple guards at the Shelby County Jail last fall after suffering a mental crisis. The footage, released in March, reveals the events of Oct 5, 2022, when guards were distributing meals. Freeman, who was unclothed, burst out of his cell and allegedly bit one of the prison guards, according to the sheriff's office. Several guards forcefully brought Freeman to the ground, subjecting him to a barrage of punches and kicks.
