Avalanches cause evacuation of climbers on Mt Shishapangma

All remaining climbers at Mount Shishapangma in the Tibet autonomous region have moved to safe places and are returning to their countries after the avalanches on Saturday left two climbers dead, two missing and two injured, the regional sports bureau said on Tuesday.

Two avalanches occurred at 7,600 meters and 8,000 meters in altitude on Saturday afternoon. Local authorities sent rescue teams and helped the climbers find a way down the mountain as soon as possible. All people arrived at the base camp.

The seriously injured climber had no life-risking wounds, and returned to Nepal on Tuesday. The slightly injured one came back to Nepal on Monday. The four climbers who died or went missing are from the United States or Nepal.

All climbing activities have been suspended because of the unstable conditions on the mountain, the bureau said.

According to Xinhua News Agency, 52 climbers were carrying out summit push when the avalanches hit, and were from multiple different countries and regions including the US, United Kingdom, Romania, Albania, Italy, Japan and Pakistan.
