The biggest threat to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is "Taiwan independence", which is also the biggest challenge facing China-US relations, therefore it must be "resolutely" opposed and such efforts must be reflected in specific policies and actions, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in Washington on Friday.

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, made the remarks during his talks with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

The top Chinese diplomat also elaborated on China's "solemn position" on the South China Sea issue, according to a readout from China's Foreign Ministry.

It said the two sides had "substantive" and "constructive" strategic communication on China-US relations, high-level exchanges between the two countries, the Palestine-Israel conflict, and other international and regional issues of mutual interest and concern.

The two sides agreed to make joint efforts to clinch a meeting between the two heads of state in San Francisco, and decided to continue strategic communication, said the readout.
