Shanghai held an event to honor voluntary blood donors on Thursday.
More than 300 representatives of the more than 9,400 individuals, 17 institutions, and five districts that won different national honors for voluntary blood donation from 2020 to 2021 were awarded at the event.
The event, which was jointly held by the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission and the Shanghai Red Cross Society as well as other organizations, aimed to pay tribute to individuals and institutions that have helped strangers via voluntary blood donation.
Chen Qinfen, a hematologist from Huashan Hospital Affiliated with Fudan University in Shanghai who has donated blood more than 120 times, was one of the laureates of the Lifetime Honor Award of the National Voluntary Blood Donation Award.
"I believe that I've lived better since 1988 when I first donated blood, because I must maintain a good health so that I can donate blood. I feel pleased each time I donate blood because I know I'm helping others," she said.
Official statistics shows that around 400,000 people participate in voluntary blood donation every year.
In 2021, 15.24 residents out of every 1,000 in Shanghai donated blood, a ratio higher than the national average.
