CAS, CAE announce new foreign additions

China's two elite science and technology institutes on Thursday announced the lists of newly selected foreign academicians for 2023.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences has selected 30 foreign academicians, while the Chinese Academy of Engineering selected 16, according to the websites of the two institutes.

Academician is the highest academic title in China. The research fields of the 46 newly elected foreign academicians are diverse, ranging from mathematical physics and life sciences, to robotics and intelligent manufacturing, and materials science.

The 30 new foreign academicians at the CAS come from 22 countries, including five from countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative.

There were first-time selections for scientists from seven countries — Ireland, Malaysia, South Africa, Norway, Spain, Hungary and Iran.

The other 16 newcomers at the CAE come from eight countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States.

The CAE said in a short news release that these new foreign academicians have a high international reputation and academic influence, and the biennial selection would be conducive to making full use of international intellectual resources and strengthening international exchanges and cooperation in engineering science and technology.

After the selection, the CAS has a total of 154 foreign academicians, while the CAE has 124.

A day before, the two elite institutes released their results for the biennial selection of new academicians of Chinese nationality, adorning 133 top scientists and scholars nationwide with the highest academic title in the country.

So far, the CAS has a total of 873 Chinese academicians, while the CAE has 978.
