China will endeavor to increase the proportion of students admitted into science and engineering disciplines to further optimize the enrollment structure of higher education institutes, according to the Ministry of Education.
Adequate support should be provided to such students to facilitate collaboration among those conducting research in key areas and industries, Minister Huai Jinpeng said during a Party meeting on Tuesday.
China will also intensify reform measures to better train high-quality engineers, Huai said.
"It is necessary to implement pilot reforms focused on nurturing talent while effective measures are taken to establish new platforms to cultivate outstanding engineers," Huai said.
Efforts to improve the core curriculum for doctoral engineer students should be accelerated, with attention given to practical training and the establishment of higher standards, he said.
More attention should be given to tackling major technological issues and strengthening the integration of developing industries, academia and research, he added.
The country will nurture innovative talent who will address key technological challenges, Huai said.
