Mozambique to start mass production of hydrogen by 2030

Xinhua | Updated: 2024-02-17 06:15

MAPUTO - The Mozambican government has set a target of placing the country as one of the leading hydrogen producers in southern Africa by 2030 under the Energy Transition Strategy, the state-run Radio Mozambique reported Friday.

"Mozambique has great potential to develop a hydrogen industry due to its abundant resources. The country has abundant hydroelectric, natural gas, solar and wind energy resources, which can support the production of all types of hydrogen, especially green hydrogen," said the report.

The role that hydrogen will play in decarbonizing the Mozambican economy will be defined, given its ability to enable transport and industrial solutions with lower emissions and costs, according to the report.

By 2024, Mozambique wants to establish objectives for the production and consumption of hydrogen, as well as the measures needed to achieve these goals, including the development of hydrogen infrastructure, said the state-run radio service.

"Mozambique will work closely with national and international partners to complete the development phase of production facilities, storage facilities, and transportation networks," said the report.
