Shanghai plans to open 120 new parks by the end of this year, according to the city's landscaping and city appearance administrative bureau.

It includes 20 urban parks, 30 countryside parks, and 70 pocket parks. The city also plans to add nearly 1,000 hectares of the green field including 500 hectares in parks, 200 hectares of greenbelt, and three-dimensional greening of 400,000 square meters.

In addition, the city will continue to promote 24-hour parks this year. So far, 60 percent of the city's urban parks are open 24 hours a day, and another 30 new parks will be added to the plan.

These efforts are in line with the government work report proposed by Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng during the second session of the 16th Shanghai Municipal People's Congress in January, aiming to make Shanghai a large-scale park city and striving to realize the unbounded integration of parks and urban space.

"Shanghai will become a city with thousands of parks," Gong said.

According to Gong, the city opened 162 parks last year, bringing the total number to 832. The goal is to reach 1,000 parks by 2025 and operate 2,000 parks by 2035.
